How To Organize Your Garage

Your garage can be prime storage real estate in your home, that is if it’s organized. The thing with garages is they tend to be a catch all space that we drop things in as we come and go from the many adventures of our busy lives. Sports equipment, outdoor tools, gardening supplies and so much more land here. Not to mention the seasonal items that are often stored in this space as well. These “drop and go” habits often lead to clutter that piles up over time.

If your garage is way more messy than you would like and you struggle to find what you need when you need it, it’s time for a garage decluttering and organizing session. Our professional home organizing tips and strategies will help you clear the garage clutter and create functional systems you can maintain to keep your garage tidy all year long.

Step One – Declutter & Sort

Depending on the size of your garage and how much stuff is in there, you can declutter your garage in one of two ways. Pull everything out onto your driveway or move everything to the center of the garage floor.

Next you will sort through all of the items deciding which ones to keep, donate, recycle or trash. Have your boxes or bins ready for this step. It will make the decision process much easier.

Remove anything that you don’t plan to keep in your garage. Now you will sort your keep items into categories like outdoor toys, lawn equipment, tools and gardening supplies. The categories you choose will depend on what items you have and what you use your garage space for.

Step Two – Zone & Plan

Now that you have your garage items neatly categorized, it’s time to plan your layout. Try to keep like items together and layout the space as you use it. For example, if you have a large amount of tools and tend to work on things in your garage, create a zone for that. Do you use your garage as a workout space? Create a zone for that. Do you really want to park your car in your garage? Plan for that.

Now, consider the types of items you need to organize. There are so many great ways to really maximize your storage space in a garage. The walls are the perfect place for vertical storage space. From custom built cabinets to wall mounted hanging track systems to pegboards, the options almost seem endless. You can even use the ceiling!

Do a little research and choose the organizing products that work best for the items you need to store. And be sure to measure, measure, measure before making purchases to help prevent having to waste time returning items that don’t work in your space.

Step Three – Organize & Maintain

Now the fun part! Putting everything away, organized of course. You have your zones and garage organizing products to help you maximize your storage space. If you are storing seasonal items, memorabilia or anything that needs to be in a bin, we recommend using clear bins with tight fitting lids. This helps you be able to easily see what’s inside and keeps your items free of dirt and moisture. If you have toys or other items that are used daily, use open front bins to make it easy to grab what you need and put it back.

If you garage is used as the primary entrance to your home, you may want to add a “mudroom” style area. Adding a shoe rack by the door can be super helpful in preventing the pile of shoes. You can also add hooks and baskets for coats, bags and other personal items. Not only will this keep those items organized in the garage, it prevents the clutter from creeping inside your home.

And finally, let’s label! Adding labels to all bins, baskets, shelves and other areas will make all the difference in maintaining all your hard work. Labels work so well, especially with little ones, in helping everyone put things back where they go. Of course labeling those storage bins makes all the difference in knowing what’s actually in there even it they are clear.

Now you can enjoy your organized and highly functional garage. You will love the feeling of opening the door and stepping into this space. Of course pulling your car in will just be icing on the organized cake!

5 Tips for Spring Cleaning

It’s really important to declutter first with any home organizing project so you don’t overbuy organizing products or buy the wrong ones. Decluttering first allows you see what what’s left for you to store so you can find a system that works best for you. I shared this tip and more with the team at WXII 12 for their Local Vibe newscast. Such a fun interview and helpful topic to guide homeowners through the decluttering process with less stress, less overwhelm and more success!

When it comes to beginning a home decluttering and organizing project, I always recommend starting small with something like your junk drawer to kickstart your organizing project.

Tracking your progress allows you to see what you’ve accomplished. Your results don’t have to look like what you see in a magazine for you to notice the changes and differences you’ve made in your space.

Quick Organizing Tips To Reset Before Summer Break

It’s that time of year where we are adjusting routines and schedules…already! Summer break brings more daily traffic and activity into your home. You may be dreading the mess that tends to come along with the kids being home all day long, but there are a few steps you can take now to prepare and offset that mess. We are laser focusing on the main “hot spots” in your home that will set the stage to keep your spaces (and sanity!) intact all summer long.

3 Spaces to Declutter and Organize for Summer Break

Kitchen

Your kitchen will likely be the hottest spot during summer break. It seems like the kids are always hungry, right? Set the stage to keep both meal prep and those snack attacks well planned and under control. No “hangry” kids and you aren’t left with a constant mess. With all things kitchen, the system is where the magic happens.

Declutter

  • Toss expired food items
  • Donate food that won’t be eaten (if it’s not expired)
  • Sort and match food containers with lids, tossing any loners
  • Declutter the reusable water bottle collection and daily use dishes

Organize

  • Create a weekly meal and snack plan with the kids
  • Set up a kid accessible snack zone in the fridge and pantry
  • Use labeled bins or baskets to help everyone put things back where they go
  • Establish expectations for clean up, age appropriate of course

Entryway/Drop Zone

As you and your crew come and go from your fun summer activities, having a clearly defined space for all of those summer essentials to live will keep the clutter from spreading throughout your home. The goal is to keep the current season’s most used items readily available while storing away all of the off season items. Set this up as close to the primary entrance to your home.

Declutter

  • Clean out book bags and lunch bags
  • Store away any winter coats and jackets
  • Swap out boots for summer sandals and flip flops
  • Trash or donate clothing, shoes and bags that don’t fit or won’t be worn next season

Organize

  • Add a labeled basket with each family members name for sunglasses, keys and personal items
  • Use hooks to catch towels, swim gear and other outdoor items
  • Have a basket or shoe shelf to keep shoes by the door
  • Create a designated bin for sunscreen and bug spray

Shared Living Spaces

The family room, playroom, and whole home will see an influx of toys, craft supplies and activity during the day. Clutter and mess can happen fast and build up quickly. Kids tend to function better, and have more fun, in a tidy space. Creating routines and clear expectations will help them enjoy their laid back summer fun.

Declutter

  • Sort toys and craft supplies (with the kids)
  • Trash any broken toys, games and puzzles with missing pieces
  • Donate toys your kids have outgrown or simply don’t play with
  • Relocate any outdoor toys and games to the garage or patio

Organize

  • Organize toys and craft supplies in labeled bins and baskets
  • Set limits on what is available each day
  • Establish zones, like craft projects in dining room and reading nook in family room
  • Create reset routines to transistion between projects and at the end of the day

Spending a little time preparing your spaces for summer break will eliminate the stress and chaos of stuff everywhere all summer long. And when your home is organized to function well, not be picture perfect, you and your family will be able to relax and enjoy the long days of sweet summertime.

Expert Book Organization Guide

Do you love your book collection, but feel like it’s always in a mess? I was so excited to contribute to this article, 37 Book Organization Ideas, full of ideas from organizing experts designed to help you create a system to organize your books. From decluttering to choosing the best organization method based on how you use your books, you will be able to truly enjoy your collection!

If you’re like most people, chances are you have accumulated many books over the years. But what do you do with all of them? How do you keep them organized and easy to find when you want to reread or recommend them to a friend? The task can seem daunting, but with a few creative and practical ideas, you can turn your cluttered bookshelves and scattered stacks into stylish, organized displays. And it can be fun, too.

“For softback children’s books, use a basket with a low front to create a flip-through system. “This will prevent softback books from getting lost between the hardbacks and will keep them upright,” notes Jill Moore, owner of Organized Jill.

Low Lift, High Impact Spring Organizing

As we close the chapter on the cold, dark winter months and step into longer days filled with sunshine, it’s time to show our homes a little decluttering and organizing love. The thought of decluttering and organizing all the things can feel overwhelming. Here’s the thing. You don’t have to tackle your entire house to begin to feel the difference of less clutter and more function. The key to your success is to focus on the primary areas of your home that make the biggest impact on your day to day routines.

5 Quick Spaces to Declutter and Organize

Entryway

This space sets the tone for how you feel when you walk in the door of your home. Keeping it clutter free and organized also helps set the stage for a quicker, less stressful departure as you head out for your day. No more frantic searches for keys, purse or other daily (and highly needed) items.

  • Remove and store away all things winter
  • Add in your spring decor
  • Use baskets or bins with labels to catch daily items
  • Add hooks for hanging items like bags and purses

Bathroom

Your bathrooms are definitely high traffic areas. Being able to quickly and easily find what you need can help save you time when you are getting ready for the day or winding down. A well organized bathroom is a game changer for busy, frantic mornings. And who doesn’t love clear countertops!

  • Check all your products and toss anything that is expired
  • Clear your countertops, leaving only daily essentials like toothpaste
  • Use labeled bins, drawer dividers and storage containers to group like items together
  • Add a back of the door organizer to create additional vertical storage space

Linen Closet

“Extra” closets can often be a magnet for clutter. We toss the fitted sheet with a hole, but feel like we need to keep the top sheet. We don’t know why exactly, but it’s what we do. And then we shut the door and move on. Reducing the amount of linens you have on hand will make keeping that closet organized so much easier.

  • Discard or donate worn out linen, stained or excessive linens
  • Set a limit of two sheets sets per bed, one on and one in the closet
  • Add labeled baskets and bins for small items like hand towels or supplies
  • Use shelf dividers to keep everything neat and organized

Playroom and Toys

If you have kids, those kids have toys. And if we are being honest, they likely have way more than they need. We all know those toys rarely stay in their dedicated space and often find their way strewn about the whole house. As we gear up to spend more time outside, this is a perfect time to sort through those toys.

  • Make this a team project working with your kid (age appropriate of course)
  • Help them decide whether to keep, donate or trash toys
  • Create play zones to help keep toys where they belong
  • Add clear, labeled bins to easily see what’s inside

Shared Living Spaces

Whether this is your living room, den or family room in the basement, any space that is shared by all can quickly become messy. Creating an organized system for these spaces can help all family members keep the space clutter free and ready for all of that family fun time.

  • Clear horizontal surfaces, using minimal decor and keeping only essential items handy
  • Consider using furniture with hidden storage like drawers in a coffee table for remotes
  • Use decorative baskets for small blankets, magazine and toys
  • Have everyone participate in a daily reset to put things back where they belong

Getting your home organized doesn’t (and really can’t) happen all at once. You will be amazed at the impact these seemingly small projects will make in your home. Quick wins build momentum to move on to those bigger projects like your kitchen or closet. Let’s ocus on progress, not perfection. Every drawer, shelf or surface you purge and reset helps create a calmer, more functional home for you and your family to enjoy.

Organize Your Home To Support You

When you think about home organization, you may picture perfectly lined shelves, beautifully labeled bins and a color coordinated closet. We can all agree an organized space is pretty, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with pretty. While the thought of a Pinterest worthy pantry can be exciting, the real benefits of an organized home goes far beyond the look of your space. This is an important consideration as you spend time thinking about the goals for your home and life. When you create realistic systems that function for you and your family, your home then supports your mental health, your energy and your daily life. You will see the results of an organized space, but you will feel it too!

Clear the Clutter

Clutter in a home is stifling and mentally heavy. It competes for your attention as you attempt to go about your day and complete your daily tasks. Piles of paper, counters full of stuff and drawers that are overstuffed with who knows what creates interruptions to your routine. Something as simple as making dinner can feel overwhelming if your pantry is a mess. Getting dressed in the morning feels stressful if your closet is overflowing. Even if you aren’t actively working on or in the cluttered space, your are mentally tuned into the mess that surrounds you.

When you declutter and create organized systems in these spaces, you reduce the “visual noise” of the clutter. We aren’t saying letting go is easy, but it is necessary to allow you to fully focus on the task at hand or fully relax and be in the moment with your family.

Free Your Mental Energy

Have you heard of decision fatigue? When you are constantly searching for something, moving stuff around or trying to decide where to put something, you’re brain is burning so much mental energy. All of those tiny, little thoughts and decisions add up and wear you down. It can feel like those simple tasks require so much more energy than needed.

When you organize and everything has a logical home, you create seamless function that simply works. You spend less time searching for items and greatly reduce the amount of little decisions you have to make. You free up your time and energy.

Systems That Match You

Is “being more productive” something you feel you need and want in your home life? Do you feel like you aren’t doing enough? Here’s the thing. Productivity isn’t about doing more. It’s really about doing the things you want and need to do with less friction, less stuff in your way. Decluttering and creating organized systems in your home can help you get there. But they have to work for your home and your family. Home organization is very personal. What works in one person’s house may work for you at all.

Create systems that store your everyday items where they are actually used to create function that works for your family. Align your systems with your reality so they naturally support your life and can actually be consistently followed through and easy to maintain.

Support, Not Perfection

Life is messy. Having a home that is perfectly organized and always tidy is likely not a realistic goal. But having a home that works for you and your life is a very realistic goal. It provides support for your time, energy and mental load. If your home feels hard to manage, it’s not you. It’s most likely a systems issue that can be improved.

organizing strategies to create a home that supports you, professional home organizer, Organized Jill, Winston Salem NC

The key is starting small and working your way through your home slowly and with intention. Small changes will have a huge impact on how you feel in your spaces. Focus on creating maintainable systems that make your everyday tasks run smoother and easier.

Organized Systems to Reclaim Your Home

Do you feel like certain spots in your home are clutter magnets? Like no matter how much you tidy up, it’s always a mess. Maybe it’s the mountain of shoes by the door or that pile of papers on your kitchen countertop. The good news is, it’s not just you. The even better news is you can turn those catch all areas into organized and functional spaces. No, you don’t have to throw everything away. You just need a system that works. And we are going to show you how to do that!

Hot Spots

The first step to taming the madness is to identify the hot spots in your home. Take a stroll through your spaces and focus on the areas where everything that comes in seems to land. This step shouldn’t be too hard. They are likely the spots that cause you frustration and overwhelm every single time you look at them. Take note of the types of items that are consistently showing up in these areas too.

how to create organized systems in your home, professional home organizer, Organized Jill, Winston Salem NC

Categorize the Mess

Sort through and create categories for the items that are in these hot spots. Look for patterns or similarities. Dumping grounds usually catch the same types of things over and over like mail, school papers, keys and clothing. Of course you will always have those random items as well. Creating categories to see what belongs and what needs to go will help as you begin to create a system to get and keep these areas organized.

A Home for Everything

One of the biggest contributors to clutter in your spaces are those homeless items. If you have a place and system for everything, it makes the task of staying organized and tidy so much easier. In this step, you will take a look at the type of items that tend to land in your catch all zones and create a system that matches those habits. Why? Because if you create systems built around the way you and your family normally live and function in your home, it will be much easier to stay organized.

  • If mail, papers and receipts tend to stay piled up on your kitchen counter, place a paper sorter in that spot.
  • Is your entryway table scattered with keys and sunglasses? Add a hook system on the wall and a labeled tray on the table.
  • Do you have a chair in your bedroom covered in “not quite dirty” clothing? Add a door hanger for these items.
  • Does your pantry seem to stay in a constant state of disarray? Add a few labeled baskets for your main items.
  • Are you beauty products scattered across your bathroom counter? Use drawer organizers to keep everything contained.

Maintain the Magic

Here’s the thing about our homes. We live in them, everyday. Getting organized feels great! Staying organized takes a little work. Setting aside time for a quick reset to prevent the clutter from creeping back in is the best way to maintain your organized systems. Ceate family habits that work with your needs. Do you spend a lot of time in your car? Create a car unload routine where everything comes in every day. Pick a day of the week to clean out your mail and paper sorter. Do a 10 minute reset before everyone goes to bed at the end of each day. Put all shoes, bookbags, jackets and other random daily items back where they go. Get the whole family involved and make it a fun game. Regular tidy up sessions keeps daily clutter under control. And you get to enjoy living in a calm, functional home!

Organized and Joyful Holiday Decorating

Decorating your home for the holiday season may be one of the most exciting parts of your holiday preparation. Of course, once you are elbow deep in tangled lights and the glitter begins to make its rather lasting appearance, frustration and overwhelm can take the joy out of this process. If you feel lost in a sea of storage containers and really not sure how you accumulated so much stuff, we can help! Our organizing strategies will help you deck the halls with organized ease. Let’s dig in!

Declutter Before Decorating

Before you begin pulling the totes out of storage, start by assessing the areas of your home you plan to add a festive touch. Declutter these spaces with the intention of creating room for your decorative set up. Have your handy donation and trash bins ready for any items that need to go. You will also need storage solutions for items that you will temporarily put away for the holiday season. These may be family photos on the mantel or books on a shelf. Creating an open, clean space allows your holiday decorations to really shine!

holiday decorating tips, professional home organizer, Organized Jill, Winston Salem NC

Unpack The Bins

The primary purpose of this step is to unpack your holiday storage bins with intention. Keep those same donation and trash bins handy for this step too. Holiday decorations often have wonderful memories attached to them. There are likely handmade ornaments from your kids or special treasures collected from different adventures you’ve enjoyed along the way. But there may also be some that you’ve accumulated that you haven’t used in years or may not work properly. Sort those out as you unpack your bins, leaving only the decorations you regularly use and enjoy displaying in your home.

Craft Your Plan

Now that you only have the items you love using, you can plan a layout for your decorations. You know what you have, now you can choose where everything goes. Focus on the areas most used by you, your family and your guests. This is also a good time to see if you need to purchase anything to add to your decor. Maybe a favorite piece was broken last year, or that set of lights you use for the snow scene burnt out. Having a plan before you start will help you avoid buying duplicates and stuff you don’t need. It can also help you avoid that “over decorated” look.

Let’s Decorate

And now the fun begins! Start and complete one room or space before moving on to stay focused and motivated. Try to blend your holiday decorations with pieces that can extend past the new year. Winter themed and neutral candles, vases and throws can give your home a festive, cozy feeling without having to completely redecorate after the holidays. Keep it simple to create a calm, balanced look. As you decorate, consider your storage needs when it’s time to take everything down. Plan ahead for this and have your clear containers and labels ready. You will love this when the time comes to put everything away until next year!

Organize to Lighten Your Mental Load

Do you often feel like your brain is always “on”, with all of the things you have to do circling around in your mind? It can feel never ending with the responsibilities you have for family, work and your home. From making sure everyone is where they need to be everyday to planning meals to laundry, the list never feels done. It’s overwhelming and exhausting carrying around this invisible mental weight. The good news is you can reduce your mental load by simplifying your routines, schedule and home.

What is mental load?

Mental load is all of the things you are thinking about that need to be done. Whether you are physically doing them or not, they are always there silently running in the background of your mind. It’s like your brain has too many tabs open or is covered in sticky notes, reminding you to schedule that dentist appointment, buy milk, wash towels and plan dinner. It doesn’t matter that you just got out of bed and haven’t even had breakfast yet. Your system is overloaded so it slows down, things get forgotten and you become stressed and overwhelmed. Mental load is invisible clutter and just like physical clutter, it can pile up fast!

reduce your mental load with organizing strategies, professional home organizer, Organized Jill, Winston Salem, NC

Ease Your Mental Load

So how do we take back control and reduce the mental clutter that’s dragging us down? The first and ongoing step is to get the list out of your head so your brain doesn’t have to remember everything. Write down what you need to do. You can create a family calendar, use a weekly planner or a simple notepad. Have multiple lists, if that helps, to separate what you need to focus on now and what can wait until later.

The key to having less to do and think about is to declutter. Work on decluttering all the things. Your spaces in your home, your schedule and your routines. It’s important to know it’s ok to reduce any unnecessary obligations that take up too much of your time. Once you’ve decluttered and removed what doesn’t serve you, you can switch gears and focus on creating systems and building routines to keep your home and life running smoothly.

If you have big home projects you can’t stop thinking about, create a plan that breaks that project down into smaller, manageable pieces. Again, write it down. If you want to declutter and organize your pantry, break that down into actionable steps like “toss expired items” or “organize snacks”. You don’t have to finish a task all at once, any progress is progress.

As you declutter and build routines, the systems start to do the heavy lifting for you. Labeled bins in the pantry, shared chore charts and a running grocery store list on the fridge isn’t just about being organized. It literally takes the pressure off of your brain. Planning your meals is easier because your pantry is organized and you have a weekly meal plan. You get to close the “don’t forget the appointment” tab in your head because you have it on the list now.

Gain More With Less

More Energy

Decision fatigue is real and really stressful. Carrying  a heavy mental load is draining. When your home and life is streamlined with systems in place, you reduce the number of decisions you have to constantly make. This naturally reduces the stress and overwhelm you feel when you are always scrambling and gives you more time and energy to do the things you want to do.

More Focus

With all those tabs open, it’s impossible to truly focus on any one thing. With less to think about, your brain has more space to give to the thing you are doing now, allowing you to more efficiently work on the task at hand. You will get more done in less time and be able to look past your day to day to plan and implement your bigger goals and projects.

More Control

When you reduce your mental load and create organized systems in your home, you will begin to feel more in control of your life and responsibilities. Your days run smoother, there’s less stress and more predictability. We all know we are not the best versions of ourselves when we are stressed. You will have more balance in your home that will be felt by you and your family.

When your home and life has organized systems that work, you and your brain can finally relax!
